Twelve years ago, I was pregnant with Justin. During my eighth month I was taken off work; so having much time on my hand my brother and I would go to our stadium to exercise. He was working out to prepare for upcoming tryouts for our local fire department. Keep in mind I’m eight months pregnant but I was going along with him for support. When the time came for tryouts, unfortunately my brother Gerald didn’t make it. Justin was three years old when he tried for the second time, didn’t make it. We as parents to our special needs child are all so familiar with obstacles, setbacks, and disappointments. I so related to the way my brother felt after having tried two times and not succeed. In 2013 he applied once again and was taking all of the necessary steps required to prepare for testing. June of last year I had a dream that he would be accepted in August. August came and he received a letter stating training would start the following month. HE MADE IT!

On last Monday I attended the graduation, after which I picked Justin up from school early to have lunch with the family. I realized Justin didn’t get a picture with his uncle. How could I forget to capture a photo with us not only being on this Autistic journey but a firefighter’s journey as well? 🙂  Each time I look at the pictures from my brother’s recent graduation; I’m often reminded the definition of determination. He is a great example of never giving up on what you can achieve. How easy would it have been for him to throw in the towel? His perseverance inspires me to not give up on my dreams and goals; as well as my hopes and dreams for Justin.

God fearing, loving mother to an awesome young man. Enjoying what I do! Although I'm not the greatest teacher, however raising a child with special needs has given me more degrees than any college university you could think of.

Would love to hear from!
